Lucy Ostrander is an acclaimed filmmaker and co-founder of Stourwater Pictures, an award-winning production company she runs with her husband, Don Sellers. Based on Bainbridge Island, Stourwater Pictures specializes in meticulously crafted documentary films that focus on historical and social issues. With a passion for storytelling, Ostrander seeks to uncover the essential narratives buried within the lives of everyday people, creating films that are not only accurate and informative but also engaging and reflective of their most important themes.

Stourwater’s documentaries emphasize social justice, with a particular focus on the stories of underrepresented communities. Many of Ostrander’s films have explored the unique history of Bainbridge Island. Among her notable works are “Red Pines,” which traces the experiences of Japanese-Americans on the island; “Island Roots,” featuring interviews with local Filipino-Americans; and “Port Blakely: Memories of a Mill Town,” which delves into the legacy of the island’s industrial past. Through her filmmaking, Ostrander has played a vital role in educating youth about their local history, with many of her films being used as teaching resources at IslandWood, an environmental education center.

Her most recent documentary, “Honor Thy Mother,” created in collaboration with Island Treasure Gina Corpuz, adds another significant layer to the island’s historical narrative and is now part of the middle school curriculum, ensuring that future generations are aware of their heritage. The impact of Ostrander’s work extends beyond screenings; her films have been showcased at numerous film festivals and universities, gaining national exposure through PBS broadcasts and international screenings.
