How To Nominate

The Island Treasure Awards, established in 1999, honor individuals whose exemplary work in the arts and/or humanities enriches the cultural fabric of Bainbridge Island. The Award recognizes an individual’s ongoing commitment to their craft as well as their vision, inspiration, and encouragement of others. The Island Treasure Award is an investment in a person’s originality, insight, and potential, rather than past achievements. However, such potential is based on a track record of significant accomplishments.

The process begins with nominations from members of the community describing the person they are nominating and their reasons for doing so. Although many Islanders have created exceptional works off the Island, the awards focus on the work nominees have done to enrich the cultural fabric of Bainbridge Island. From there the nominations move to the jury, a rotating group of Islanders, representing a wide range of Island cultural representatives, who make the final selections for confirmation by the Island Treasure Committee. Each Island Treasure receives a $5,000 cash prize. The new Treasures are honored at the Island Treasure Award Ceremony. The 2024 Awards ceremony will be held on February 10 at the new Buxton Center for Bainbridge Performing Arts.

The Island Treasure Awards process is based on the MacArthur Fellows Program. The integrity of this process depends on absolute and permanent secrecy of nominators and jurors. Names of nominators, candidates, and judges are held in confidence. Nominators are asked to ensure that their name or relationship to the candidate is not included or referenced in any way. Please note that committee members and past winners are not eligible for nomination.

To nominate someone for the award:

  • Complete the Island Treasure Awards nomination form one of two ways:
  • Provide a small sample of the candidate’s work. This might include written work, slides or photographs, CD’s or DVD’s, articles about the candidate, reviews, or links to the work.
  • Suggest where we can find additional information about your nominee.
  • Include your contact information on the nomination. While the names of nominators are confidential and will not be given to nominees or jurors, the Island Treasure Committee may need to reach out to you to verify information.
