Frequently Asked Questions

Please remember that this award is about the work performed in the arts and/or in the humanities, work that is so outstanding that it stands as a model to those who enter that particular field. It is NOT intended to simply recognize community involvement or service, philanthropy, or someone who is simply a wonderful human being —as worthy as all those may be!  Island Treasure Award Committee members are not eligible for nomination.

Q      How do you describe the Humanities?
A      The humanities are the stories, the ideas, and the words that help us understand our lives and our world. They introduce us to people we have never met, places we have never visited, and ideas that may never have crossed our minds. The humanities point the way to answers about what is ethical and what is true to our diverse heritage, traditions, and history. As fields of study, the humanities emphasize analysis and exchange of ideas and may be interdisciplinary. Please refer to the nomination page for a list of areas covered by the humanities category.

Q      May I submit more than one nomination?
A      Yes, but not more than two

Q      May I nominate myself?
A      No

Q      Must the candidate live on Bainbridge Island?
A      No, but it must be clear that their work enriches the cultural fabric of the Island.

Q      How should I proceed if the candidate is active in more than one field?
A      Please check all the areas in which the candidate works, but indicate which is primary.

Q      May I nominate someone who is an active supporter of the arts and humanities but does no hands-on work in those fields?
A      While the person you are considering may not have a body of hands-on work, they may have through their efforts done significant work to support the arts and humanities on Bainbridge Island. However, please note this award is not about supporting the arts and humanities through philanthropy, but rather about work done to support the Island’s cultural riches.

Q      Can I discuss this nomination with others or the person I want to nominate?
The Island Treasure Awards process depends on absolute and permanent secrecy of nominators and jurors. We therefore ask that you not discuss your nomination with others or the candidate.
