Lynn Brunelle’s first job in Maine was teaching 28 “behavior problem” students in a single classroom that served grades 4 through 8. She soon discovered that the biggest “problem” was that the kids thought differently and simply needed to have their brains and curiosity engaged. With that important lesson learned, she moved on to New York to write, illustrate, and edit books and programs for kids that offered simple science projects as family activities. In 1998 she moved from New York to Seattle to write for Bill Nye,The Science Guy — and was awarded 4 Emmys for her efforts, and in 2005, moved to the Island.

In addition to the 45-plus books she has written so far, and her many “how to do science with your kids” videos, Lynn has created music videos on subjects such as preventing bullying and the adolescent brain. She has also written scripts for programs ranging from National Geographic to Disney, and for clients from Martha Stewart to The Annenberg Foundation. She has received five Telly Awards for excellence in video and television.

For Lynn, science is the magic that makes common things amazing. Her latest two books, Big Science for Little People and Turn this Book into a Beehive, demonstrate, as one reader put it,“her passion to make complicated things accessible and fun. Lynn makes kids (and their parents) wonder, question, get their hands dirty, and have fun — all while learning how cool science is.”

Lynn’s memoir, Mama Gone Geek, which won the Independent Publisher’s Gold Medal Award, describes how one might navigate some perils of parenthood by accessing one’s inner nerdiness. We all can enjoy the ride and learn her secrets as she shares with us tales that take us into the heart of her family and on her journey as a science geek.
